Small Leaks Sink Ships has not traveled an easy road. Getting their start in Phoenix in 2007, the group gained quick momentum as an intricate math-rock quartet with heartfelt and progressive song structures. However, as the group prepared to release an epic double LP in 2009 one of their members, Ryan Garner, was in a serious car accident that left him in recovery for the next year. The band broke the release into a smaller, more manageable 5-track EP, ‘Oak St. Basement’ and planned to tour upon Garner’s recovery. But as they prepared to hit the road in 2011, tragedy struck again when member Judd Hancock was diagnosed with cancer. Once more, the project was put on hold to focus on healing. As the band re-grouped and began writing, the final set-back would occur with guitarist Rafael Macias breaking his collarbone in a vespa accident, leaving the band sidelined once again.

Refusing to be stopped and leaving adversity behind them, Small Leaks Sink Ships relocated to Portland, OR and released their first full-length in seven years, ‘Face Yourself, and Remove Your Sandals” in 2015. The ten track album packs an emotional punch that paints a picture of great sacrifice and tremendous recovery; the very sound of what it means to play music together despite the odds being stacked against you. Though their path has been at times ruthless and unforgiving, Small Leaks Sink Ships have transcended their hardships and transmuted their pain into beautifully-crafted songs of perseverance and survival.
